Newborn sleep can feel like a mystery to new parents. Understanding a few basics about newborn sleep patterns can make those early months a little easier. Here are five essential things to know about your newborn's sleep.

Newborns sleep a lot, but in short bursts
Newborns need a lot of sleep—some can sleep about 16 to 18 hours a day! However, this sleep happens in short stretches of 2-4 hours because their small tummies need frequent feeding. It’s normal for them to wake often, day and night.
Day and Night Confusion Is Common
In the first few weeks, newborns may not have a clear sense of day and night. This “day-night confusion” happens because their internal clock (circadian rhythm) hasn’t developed yet. Keeping things bright and active during the day and dim and quiet at night can help them adjust over time.
Every Baby Is Different
While newborns have similar sleep needs, each baby’s sleep habits will be different. Some may be naturally better sleepers, while others might need more help learning how to fall and stay asleep. Don’t compare your baby’s sleep to others—focus on their individual needs.
Safe Sleep Is a Must
Always follow safe sleep guidelines to reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Babies should sleep on their backs, in their own sleep space (like a crib or bassinet), on a firm mattress without loose bedding or toys. Check out my blog ‘A Guide to Safe Sleeping Practices’ for a guide to current safe sleeping recommendations.
NEWBORN SLEEP is a Phase—This Too Shall Pass
The frequent waking and irregular sleep patterns of newborns don’t last forever. As babies grow, their sleep stretches will lengthen, and their schedule will become more predictable. Remember, it’s a phase, and your baby will eventually sleep for longer periods.
Understanding these key points can help you approach newborn sleep with more patience and confidence.
